Tevez shows support for Ronaldo

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez says Cristiano Ronaldo should be allowed to join Real Madrid if that is what he wants.

Tevez risked upsetting United boss Sir Alex Ferguson by sympathising with his team-mate while club officials insist the Portugal star should honour his contract.

Tevez said: "The team has great players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, of course.

"It's clear that he is a very important player for us, but this is a personal decision, which is up to only him.

"I understand Cristiano. Every footballer wants to play at Real Madrid. On the other hand, I also think that everyone wants to play for Manchester United, but if what he seeks is something else, I think that should be respected.

"I have not talked to him, but when these things happen, neither side feels good."

Earlier this week, United chief executive David Gill tried to dissuade Real from making an offer for Ronaldo.

He said: "We made it clear to them from day one we wouldn't welcome a bid, it wouldn't be accepted and therefore I don't think there is much point in putting one in."
