Rooney wants tussle with Ronaldo

Wayne Rooney hopes to go head-to-head with team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo in a battle to become the best footballer in the world.

Ronaldo is widely-expected to be named European and World Footballer of the Year when those awards are handed out in the coming months.

Rooney has been tipped to win those titles himself one day, but he admits he is not yet as good as Ronaldo, or Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

He said: "It is right people like Cristiano and Lionel Messi should be up for these awards and hopefully I can get there one day.

"If I keep working and keep progressing, I would like to think I could at any rate. But it is not about me, it is about the team.

"I would rather win a trophy with the team than anything personal. I have always felt like that."

Rooney will win his 47th England cap in the World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan at Wembley but he admits he is disappointed that he has missed several matches through injury and suspension.

He added: "I am quite disappointed with my caps total.

"I have missed games through suspension and injury when, if all had gone well, I might have had 60.

"I definitely feel I should have more than my current total."
